Rocky Premiered This Week In 1976
On November 20 and 21, 1976, New York City was host of a movie premiere that would reach a nationwide audience a couple of weeks later on December 3. Rocky was the fictional story of boxer, Rocky Balboa, a heavy-weight underdog boxer in the fight of his life against Apollo Creed, the undisputed, larger-than-life champ.
Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Burt Young, Carl Weathers and Burgess Meredith starred in Stallone’s screenplay, directed by John G. Avildsen. The movie had more than its share of sequels and retellings, spoofs, special edition DVDs, documentaries and action figures.
The story is an amazing tale of the human spirit and overcoming obstacles and hardships to win at life. The result of what happened in the ring was not the final decision, rather the fact that Rocky wouldn’t stay down. It’s also a great Christmas movie, with many of the songs from the soundtrack being Christmas songs.
My favorite part of the film is, in fact, the music. Bill Conti’s “Gonna Fly Now” is perhaps one of the greatest “pump-up” motivational songs ever written.
