‘Underdog’ Animator Joe Harris Dies at age 89
Classic and memorable advertisements, illustrated by Joe Harris, were a part of our childhood. He created the Trix bunny — “Silly Rabbit, Trix are for kids!” — and the iconic Underdog.
His 1950s creation of the “Silly Rabbit” for Trix is one we still see on boxes of General Mills cereal today. Though the character went through variations in style, the premise of the original Harris style maintained the original recognizable design.
The Underdog Show debuted in 1964 on NBC, voiced by the legendary Wally Cox, animated by Harris. Harris co-wrote the Underdog theme song. The early episodes had the same style of comedy as Tennessee Tuxedo and Bullwinkle and Rocky, a style that was crisp and mature, where adults and children could both be entertained. Harris died on March 26th.
