‘Once Upon A Time’ recap: ‘Awake’
This blog contains spoilers from “Once Upon A Time” Season 6:
This week picks up with Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) running from a pack of Lost Boys in Neverland after being abandoned by Black Beard. Gideon (Giles Matheny) cursed Hook, and he has been prevented from returning to Storybrooke. As he faces off with the Boys, poison darts seemingly come from nowhere and take them down.
Hook’s apparent rescuer is Tiger Lily, who then turns a dart toward the captain and takes him to her cave.
Meanwhile, Regina (Lana Parrilla) and Zelena (Rebecca Mader) are still trying to break the Evil Queen’s sleeping curse that has keep the Charmings apart for weeks.
Faced with the possibility that Emma (Jennifer Morrison) may have to face the Black Fairy without her parents, David (Josh Dallas) and Snow (Ginnifer Goodwin) ask Regina to proceed with the risky experiment and try to wake them up.
This prompts a flashback to the time of the first dark curse, when everyone in Storybrooke didn’t remember who they were. We see Mary Margaret (Snow) walking down the sidewalk as usual, when she bumps into Regina. The mayor assures her that John Doe (David) is going to stay in a coma. She spots a single pink flower sprouting through the concrete and decides to bring it to Mr. Doe.
After placing it in a vase, Mary Margaret turns to leave when she hears the machines beeping. John Doe awakens and remembers who he is! He frantically tries to job Mary Margaret’s memory, and when the two touch hands, magic flashes and her memory returns. It turns out the flower had pixie dust, and also has the power to return people to their True Love.
Back in present-day Storybrooke, Regina and Zelena try to pull the magic out of the Charmings’ shared heart. It at first seems to be a successs, but Snow falls to the ground with chest pain. Of course, the Evil Queen being the Evil Queen put a fail-safe into the curse. So, before the end of the night, Snow and David would both be asleep indefinitely.
In Neverland, Tiger Lily is shocked when Hook reveals he’s in love. She won’t let him go until she does him a favor. It’s then they realize that they quest is the same. She wants him to take a weapon — a wand — to the Savior, so that she may defeat the Black Fairy (Jaime Murray) and prevent war from spreading over Neverland. They hatch a plan for Hook to get magic sap from a tree to call his shadow and return to Emma. As he’s being whisked away into the night, he’s prevented from leaving the ground. He sends the wand on without him.
In past Storybrooke, the now uncursed Snow and David search for Emma. David visits Mr. Gold (Robert Carlyle) in hopes that Rumplestiltskin is still awake. Once Emma’s name is spoken, Gold acknowledges David’s quest and gives them information about the pixie flowers. He also tells them they’re awake too early, it’s only been 10 years and Emma won’t break the curse until her 28th birthday. He gives them a potion to go back under the curse.
Snow and David use the flowers to open a portal that will lead to Emma. They open the door and see a young Emma, presumably in an orphanage or foster home, sitting on the bed listening to music. David is ready to be reunited with their daughter, but Snow hestitates. She realizes that if they go through the portal, everyone in Storybrooke will be forever cursed and separated from the ones they love. They make the heart-wrenching decision to close the door and leave Emma alone for the greater good of the town.
Back in the present, Emma and Snow go in search of pixie flowers, which only appear in the presence of evil, to break the double sleeping curse. They come upon a whole field of the coveted pink bloom. Just as they’re going to collect them, the Black Fairy and Gideon show up, threaten Emma with talk of the final battle and wipe all the flowers from the field. All seems lost and Snow begins to confess that they had the chance to be a family during the Dark Curse, when Emma spots a single pink bud sprouting from the barren earth.
They quickly head back to Snow’s apartment. Just as they’re preparing to use the pixie petals, Hook’s shadow arrives and gives Emma the wand. It also drops the captain’s hook and Emma knows immediately that Hook is in grave danger. Knowing the petals are the only way to reunite Emma with Hook, Snow sacrifices the cure to reunite her daughter with her True Love. Emma brings Hook back and he confirms his commitment to her and re-proposes.
Meanwhile, Rumple confronts the Black Fairy and lets her know Gideon defied her and left one flower standing. He vows to get Gideon’s heart back and reiterates that Gideon has part of Belle (Emilie de Ravin) goodness in him still.
Regina devises one more plan to wake the Charmings up. After revealing the couple’s sacrifice for the town during the First Dark Curse, she asks all of the townspeople to take a little bit of the sleeping curse. Theoretically, this should dilute the curse enough to wake up the Charmings.
At first, it appears it’s unsuccessful and everyone except the Charmings are asleep. Slowly, the townspeople begin to stir and everyone wakes up. So, Emma has everyone behind her as they prepare for the final showdown with the Black Fairy.
“Once Upon A Time” airs at 8 p.m. Sundays on ABC.
